Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Waste

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

I now try to buy as many items packed in metals or glass as possible to reduce the amount of plastics I consume.  We also recycle as much as possible at home and have found that we end up with much less trash at home.  Having a large water pitcher with filter in the fridge has helped to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles.

Today I started eating more organic vegetables.  Yesterday I tried my first grass fed organic beef stick and it was absolutely amazing.  The best part was it was found right in my local Safeway and is a great protein snack.  Also found some glass containers to use as storage instead of the plastic ones I used to use.

Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Plastic ziplock bags are a common item I use at home.  I have purchased some glass sealable containers that should be able to store leftovers and items in the fridge.

Finding reusable freezer storage containers would help with items that need to be frozen.

I've also substituted single use plastic zip locks with reusable ones made out of silicone. They are super easy to clean and don't take lots of room to store.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

Going for walks in the neighborhood and working out with my husband and friends still gets quality time in together and allows us to be healthier.

Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I try to go to bed 30 minutes earlier and turn of electronics.  Also using a natural sleep aid like Melatonin helps me to fall asleep faster and stay asleep.
