REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Deniz Whittier 10/23/2019 9:49 AMI ran the Chicago Half Marathon without training for it outside of regularly going to the gym. I had the same time as I did the previous year where I tried to run a little more. As a result, since the run ended, as a birthday present for myself, I purchased an unlimited gym membership. So to make sure the bang for my buck is high, I'm trying to visit at least 15 times per month. As a result, I'm spending more time off the screen, more time in community space! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Deniz Whittier 10/15/2019 2:21 PMProcessed meat is part of US culture as fervently displayed in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Responding to this question as a person raised with Mediterranean and Central Anatolian cuisine, meat was always a delicacy for us that is meticulously prepared. The community that I live in now in the Front of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago consumes "meat" through fast food or other less thought out means. The goal is to provide a high bang for your buck in terms of protein, not a valuable food experience you take with you to remember later on. Eating more meat affects our planet by continuing the culture of "fast" as opposed to quality. Deforesting the Amazon for cattle raising and farmland in Brazil is one of the affects of this culture which we were exposed to this past summer.
