Dain's actions
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 4 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

Dain White 10/22/2019 7:57 AMI had to drive hundreds of miles over the past few days for a family emergency, and even though I don't have the most fuel efficient vehicle, I did my best to 'hypermile' on the trip. I was amazed at how much additional gas mileage I could squeeze out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Dain White 10/17/2019 8:21 AMFor me, spending time in nature and exploring the wilderness gives me a sense of clarity, scale, and perspective, making it easier to identify where I fit in, how my impact can benefit others, and more than anything, how important it is to preserve natural beauty for future generations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Dain White 10/17/2019 8:17 AMKnowing what plants are edible not only help in a survival situation, but can also be useful when camping, hiking, or just having a 'cheeky nibble' here and there. I've always been interested in learning more about this subject. I was surprised to find that in my area, there are only two sources of edible food listed in the map resource - I guess I have some work to do to help expand that map! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Dain White 10/17/2019 8:15 AMWhere I live, hydroelectric and wind generation provides 100% of our municipal and rural power supply, and our electrical power is literally the lowest in the nation as a result. I think for my area, a bigger issue is moving people away from their cars. As good as my town is for clean energy, they score a big fat F- for public transportation. I think pressing for public transportation, with routes that meet the need of employees to the larger employers in the area is critical. -
Dain White 10/16/2019 10:28 AMI've decided that this fall, I am going to retain the leaves that fall and cover all bedding areas to they can rot over the winter and provide nutrients to my plants and bushes. Not sure how my neighbors will like this, but I know my plants will. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Dain White 10/09/2019 10:25 AMIt is human nature for things to be 'out of sight, out of mind', and this applies as much if not more so, to waste. I had a pretty active week of purchases for my daughter's birthday recently, and we put all of the packing materials, blister packaging, etc. on the kitchen table to show our kids how much waste was generated. It was appalling. We're going to start seeking out products that use sustainable and recyclable packaging, and doing our best to minimize the impact our purchases make. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Dain White 10/09/2019 10:19 AMUnfortunately, the town I live in has very limited recycling options, but it has a very strong free-cycle / reuse online community. We have a large variety of donation organizations, and my family uses these as often as we can to divert as much as possible from the waste stream. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Dain White 10/09/2019 10:15 AMWe elected to plan our vacation adventures around where we could drive. While it's not the standard vacation experience, it provides my family with the adventure and escape we need to call it a vacation -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Dain White 10/09/2019 10:14 AMI've been investing the money I've saved back into upgrades for my home, including a smart NEST thermostat, a new energy efficient furnace and air conditioner, new vinyl double-pane windows, and hope to be able to afford some additional blow-in insulation in my attic soon. These investments will save us a lot of money over time! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Dain White 10/09/2019 10:11 AMWe have a very productive apple tree, and I'd like to get a dehydrator to make apple chips to have as a handy and more healthy snack option.
