Carol's actions
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 10 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

Carol White 10/23/2019 5:05 AMCan't believe we're finished. I feel like I'm finally getting into the swing of things. I joined the July plastic challenge almost a month and a half before it started and began working on my actions so really had time to make lasting changes. I'll have to pay attention to the upcoming challenges so I start on them earlier. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Carol White 10/22/2019 12:04 PMWe don't have good mass transit where I live so I have to drive. I can't carpool because of the hours that I work. But I do try to run my errands together in a loop to save on gas and reduce emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Carol White 10/22/2019 12:01 PMWhen I list the things/people I'm grateful for, I realize how much I already have. When I keep that at the forefront, it helps me not buy more. -
Carol White 10/20/2019 10:54 AMI was watching the leaves fall while I was washing dishes. When there's a good breeze it looks like it's snowing. I guess fall is definitely here. -
Carol White 10/19/2019 7:50 PMWas able to download PDFs of summit transcripts instead of ordering a paper copy. -
Carol White 10/18/2019 5:25 AMMade a haul yesterday. Picked up almost 10 pounds of organic broccoli, got my herbal tincture, and received my broccoli sprouting seeds and cacao. I'll pick up a fresh supply of organic produce at Whole Foods tonight. There's a local olive oil store I want to check out this weekend. So exciting! -
Carol White 10/17/2019 5:03 AMI pick up my herbal tincture this afternoon and the ceremonial cacao should be delivered today. Hopefully, the broccoli sprout seeds will come today as well. I stopped at Costco last night to pick up broccoli and they didn't have ANY. I could eat broccoli at every meal and very often do just that. -
Carol White 10/15/2019 6:21 PMStarted seeing an herbalist this last weekend. The herbs are organic or wildcrafted locally. Another exciting venture in my health journey. -
Carol White 10/11/2019 6:32 AMOne of the things I'm grateful for today is living in a time when music is available all the time. I listened and sang to a hymn CD on the way to work. I can plug in earbuds and listen to my choice (music, drums, solfeggio tones) at work, most of the time. I can listen to music at home in any room I want. I've been exploring healing through sound so having access to music and sounds in all the various formats is awesome. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Carol White 10/10/2019 7:42 AMI learned a lot on recycling during the plastic free challenge. We have local facilities that recycle EPS foam, computers/monitors, corded appliances, batteries, light bulbs, etc. One of my teammates found a resource to recycle clothes that we'd normally trash. Then there are all the Terra Cycle options available. We also have a company that will take compostable items.
I think the most difficult part of recycling the stuff that can't go in the curbside bin is actually getting it to the various recycling centers. I don't want to make a special trip nor do I want to haul stuff around in my trunk on the off chance that I'll drive by the facility. It's still a work in process.
