Heidi's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Water
Install a Toilet Tank Bank
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water each day by installing a toilet tank bank.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 15 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 60 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 30 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
High Impact Action Track
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food
I will cook 2 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Join An Outdoor ProjectHow well do you know the area you live in? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?
Heidi Weber 10/17/2019 7:45 AMI just moved into the Spokane area and am excited to explore the various regions and ecosystems it offers. Today was a small taste of one of those ecosystems being a part of an event to replant trees in an area that used to be a shallow lake bed and will open next year to the public as a hiking/walking trail park. It was so great to be a small piece of that project. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Heidi Weber 10/10/2019 5:04 PMthere is a facility less than 5 miles from my house that will accept all number-marked plastics (beyond the normal curbside accepted materials), so I will start putting those aside for drop-off rather than putting them in the garbage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Heidi Weber 10/10/2019 9:05 AMMeat is a high-cost luxury when you don't have the necessary resources to raise animals for slaughter. Per pound, legumes, grains and vegetables feed more people more efficiently. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Heidi Weber 10/02/2019 8:40 AMI use as much of the plant or animal as I can into my cooking. Additionally, if I am anticipating that I won't use a food item before it will spoil, I prep it and freeze it to use later. If I can't use a part of the fruit or vegetable, the dogs get a little treat!
