Waste

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Visit a Waste Management Facility

I will spend at least 45 minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 4 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Weekly Meal Planning

I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Excited to bring my first bucket of compost to the compost turner(?) in my building either tonight or tomorrow! :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I'm re-using some of my zip lock bags. Hoping to phase those out completely but I'm such a big plastic bag user, it's going to be hard!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Visit a Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?

It was very interesting to zoom past all the recycling methods Haworth (in Michigan,) uses in their manufacturing and design.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

It felt good to pull out my own (keeps it hotter longer,) re-usable cup for my coffees at the airport on my trip last week.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

When I did this a few weeks ago, it was quite a time commitment. I'm planning to try a few different methods this time to make the actual prep part a little quicker/easier.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Water is harder than coffee for some reason, but I don't drink as much water as I should in general so it's not a big change.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I do not yet know how I will use my compost, "once it's ready," but I can note that I've recently changed location of compost storage from below my sink to out on my balcony. Perhaps I will invest in a better more seal-able close able container because when the snow comes, I don't think I'll want to have to step outside every time I'm dumping my french press.
