Cayla's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Cayla Strong 10/20/2019 10:07 PMI try to drink my late night coffees with a reusable mug while doing HW! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Cayla Strong 10/19/2019 2:46 PMI am more conscious about taking quicker showers and try to wash my hair every other day instead of every day to lessen my product use and water consumption. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Cayla Strong 10/19/2019 2:44 PMI went to Schnucks and prepped 5 meals this week, including one today, of whole wheat tortillas and cheese to make quesadillas. I did not buy any excess of ingredients. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Cayla Strong 10/17/2019 9:56 AMBy using a reusable water bottle I am already saying no to plastic straws a lot more. However, I am practicing not using plastic straws with my coffee, such as at Starbucks. I did this today! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Cayla Strong 10/17/2019 9:55 AMSometimes if I am getting coffee, especially from Starbucks or cherry tree, it's hard to use a reusable bottle! However, drinking water from a reusable bottle is something I can control and aim to work on. Yesterday, for example, I did not use the plastic BD cups, and instead remembered to bring down my reusable water bottle and filled that up.
