Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.

Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 20 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

Reflection QuestionHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Valerie Sorenson 10/23/2019 6:21 PMHealthy personal habits often coincide with environmentally-responsible practices. Healthy individuals comprise healthy communities. -
Reflection QuestionWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Valerie Sorenson 10/23/2019 6:18 PMThere is a recycling facility across from our campus in Lake Forest. Furthermore, I’ve spent at least 209 hours, if not more, looking for organizations and individuals to take my baby furniture and other supplies so that they don’t end up in landfills. There is an organization in Gurnee that takes gently-used baby supplies and donates them to families who need them. Since children grow out of many of these products while they are still I. perfectly-good condition it is a responsible practice to look for ways to donate or sell them so they are not discarded in landfills. -
Reflection QuestionWaste Visit a Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?
Valerie Sorenson 10/23/2019 6:15 PMI visited the waste transfer station down the street from my house. There is currently an air quality study being conducted in the vicinity of the transfer station and its impact to the community. -
Reflection QuestionTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?
Valerie Sorenson 10/23/2019 5:58 PMI cannot work from home in my field, but I am happy that my spouse can and does. This allows our family’s overall impact to be less. -
Reflection QuestionHigh Impact Action Track Research Impact InvestingHow might impact investing help you better live your values?
Valerie Sorenson 10/23/2019 5:42 PMOur dollars are powerful, and it makes a difference what we do with them, especially with our investments. We can motivate corporations to use more responsible practices if we let our money talk. -
Reflection QuestionHigh Impact Action Track Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Valerie Sorenson 10/23/2019 5:40 PMI will use teleconferencing instead of traveling by plane. I hope to use trains next time. -
