Maggie's actions
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.
High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home.

Maggie Songer 10/01/2019 12:24 PMI grew up with parents who were into sustainability....When I was a kid we had solar hot water and passive solar greenhouse (which provided heat to our home) in the 1980's! (My 5th grade class took a field trip to my house). I don't have the funds to make such improvements to my house yet, but there are many little things that I can do... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Maggie Songer 10/01/2019 12:10 PMStraws and cups and plastic bags are what I regularly use the most. I can go without a straw and use reusable cups and bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Maggie Songer 10/01/2019 12:08 PMIt makes all people healthier and using less processed food is much better for the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Maggie Songer 10/01/2019 12:07 PMThis does not surprise me at all...I have been guilty of this in the past. I have especially over-purchased fresh produce. We could be paying off the mortgage faster! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My HomeHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?
Maggie Songer 10/01/2019 12:05 PMI can prevent myself from accumulating more things in the future by asking myself if I already have something that may do the job of something that I am thinking about purchasing...
