Maggie's actions

Food

Weekly Meal Planning

I will reduce food waste and save money by prepping for 1 meal(s) each day, only buying the ingredients I need.

DAILY ACTIONS

High Impact Action Track

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Waste

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

Recycle Everything I Can

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

More Fruits and Veggies

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

I grew up with parents who were into sustainability....When I was a kid we had solar hot water and passive solar greenhouse (which provided heat to our home) in the 1980's! (My 5th grade class took a field trip to my house). I don't have the funds to make such improvements to my house yet, but there are many little things that I can do...

High Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Straws and cups and plastic bags are what I regularly use the most. I can go without a straw and use reusable cups and bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

It makes all people healthier and using less processed food is much better for the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

This does not surprise me at all...I have been guilty of this in the past. I have especially over-purchased fresh produce. We could be paying off the mortgage faster!

How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I can prevent myself from accumulating more things in the future by asking myself if I already have something that may do the job of something that I am thinking about purchasing...
