Thank you for contacting me to express your views on nutrition provisions in the Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) Agriculture Appropriations bill. I appreciate hearing from you.
I have heard from many Oregonians who support efforts to reduce the amount of sodium in school meals and increase consumer transparency through Nutrition Facts labeling. I have long believed that consumers have a right to know what is in their food. A clearly worded Nutrition Facts label is the most commonsense way to bring more transparency to consumers so they can make more informed decisions. You will be pleased to know that Section 755 of the bill does not include restrictions on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) sodium reduction efforts.
The FY20 Agriculture Appropriations bill, which I helped write as the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture and Rural Development, was unanimously approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee on September 19, 2019 and must now go before the full Senate for consideration. The House of Representatives has passed a different version of this bill that includes funding for sodium reduction technical assistance and FDA’s consumer-awareness campaigns on Nutrition Facts labeling. Eventually, the differences between the two must be reconciled.
I have and will continue to advocate for adequate funding for federal nutrition programs and labeling information that is transparent for all Americans. Please know that I am deeply engaged in this process and I will keep your views in mind as the legislation moves forward.

Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. Julie Sinistore 10/22/2019 10:25 AMMy colleague in the Portland office found a place to recycle jeans right near our office! I've also heard that Levis will take back jeans and Nike will take back athletic shoes.
