Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

I started to carry my water bottle around with me EVERYWHERE. It has become an item that I need to have with me or I feel incomplete. Much like patting your pockets for your phone, wallet, and car keys, I have a similar feeling when I am without my water bottle. As long as it comes with me in the car, I am sure to not use a disposable water bottle or cup. I bring it with me to some eateries in case they do not have dishware. A lot of places will provide disposable cups to use for their water. I also found it helpful to just leave another water bottle in the car at all times in case I forgot my usual one or one of the kids needed to use it.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I have actually gotten really good at using my coffee mug (hydro flasks are THE BEST) to reduce and work towards eliminating the amount of single use cups I would otherwise use. The biggest challenge for me was to simply remember my cup if I were to buy coffee rather than make it at home on a given day. I really needed to CREATE a new habit in which I was reliant on my reusable mug. If I forgot it, then I would second guess buying the coffee in the first place knowing I was going to create waste.

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I really want to focus on the first of the "R"s. I find myself often doing a good job with most of the others but I want to make smarter choices that allow me to initially reduce the amount of materials that I "consume".
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this idea?

I love everything about this! I have been focused on optimizing the way my body functions by looking at the foods I am putting into it. By means of various "experiments" if you will, I have found that dairy and gluten are certain things I try to avoid due to their impacts on my health. It is much more efficient to spend money on the right foods for you than to pay someone much more to help fix what you have broke.
