This challenge has been a great way to break some of my current habits and form better, more sustainable practices moving forward.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How do you practice self care?

I try to get a balance of good sleep and exercise as much as I can.  I am appreciating time to mentally rejuvenate now too.

It's always an extra step to make sure I turn off all the lights in the house for the day before I leave - but a small step that I'm seeing pay off.  I'm excited about the growing potential of smart homes and the ability to turn on/off things remotely as needed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF's avatar
BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF 10/16/2019 6:29 AM
I have been impressed lately at the number of meat substitute options out there that actually taste pretty good!  Black bean or other plant based  alternatives are way better for the environment and are quite delicious!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF's avatar
BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF 10/14/2019 7:08 AM
We love taking our young one to new places and it makes us see things through a renewed focus.  Understanding the pieces - big and small - of the outdoors is humbling and exhilarating.

The MSR Design team is cranking away at earning points for the ECOchallenge! Let's keep it up!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF's avatar
BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF 10/14/2019 7:04 AM
With a toddler in the house it's a bit harder to drop the thermostat set point so everyone is comfortable, but we use extra layers and blankets to keep the temperature as low as possible in the winter.  Vacancy sensors and light timers are our next steps to reduce our electric load.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF's avatar
BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF 10/11/2019 11:05 AM
Eating less meat and more locally grown produce will not only make a greater impact on the environment, but also make me healthier as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

    BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF's avatar
BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF 10/10/2019 11:19 AM
Saving money on energy efficient decisions allows me to save to other cosmetic home improvement projects.  Someday soon I hope to install an electric vehicle charging station at my home for convenient overnight charging.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

    BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF's avatar
BETH PIPING PLOVER ROLOFF 10/10/2019 11:17 AM
In addition to choosing LED light bulbs, I also look for Energy Star rated appliances.
