Laura's actions
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 20 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 2 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

Laura Rogers 10/03/2019 11:18 AMLast night I took some of the extra zucchini from my garden and made some bread. It tastes great and I can give some to my neighbors. Win win! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Laura Rogers 10/02/2019 11:11 AMEnvironmental factors play a huge role in health and possible issues with health. Having an environment free of chemicals and toxic materials is important for everyone, especially pets and children. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Laura Rogers 9/30/2019 4:28 PMI love volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank. They do so much more than give food to people in need. They also work with businesses to save food from going bad and turn it into another item (ie vegetables going back turned into soup). This helps the environment, people in need, and lessens waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Laura Rogers 9/30/2019 2:07 PMMy next step is to reduce the amount of water I use when washing the dishes. I tend to leave the water running while I wash, when I could actually turn the water off. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Laura Rogers 9/30/2019 2:06 PMI get to see more of my neighborhood this way. I notice what my neighbors are doing, how the leaves are changing, and what else is going on. Some days I even run into my neighbors on my walk! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Laura Rogers 9/30/2019 2:04 PMThings are very easy for me to recycle in my area. I also live with someone who recycles polystyrene, so we are able to reduce our impact on landfill even more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Laura Rogers 9/30/2019 2:02 PMI want to get at least seven hours of sleep per night. I am going to start my bedtime routine earlier and limit my screen time after 8:45 pm. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Laura Rogers 9/30/2019 1:42 PMI am going to harvest zucchini from my garden tonight. I am going to freeze some of it and bake with the rest.
