Isis's actions
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 7 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Community
Host a House Party
I will host a house party with 5 friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on an environmental issue that matters to me.
Simplicity
Have a Garage Sale
I will have a group garage sale with friends, family, and/or neighbors.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Isis Rielly 10/21/2019 1:15 PMI have began to realize that needs should be valued over wants. They are more valuable and needs are things you actually need to survive and that's more crucial than what one actually wants. Wants are not mandatory to live. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Isis Rielly 10/08/2019 1:21 PMSome single use plastics I use include juice cartons, plastic wrappers, and vegetable bags. I can instead use things that aren't wrapped in these and buy paper juice cartons. I can also recycle!-
Lora Jones 10/09/2019 8:45 PMGreat ideas, Isis! Paper wrapped juice cartons are somewhat biodegradable. You could also buy juice in glass containers, which are still very recyclable.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Isis Rielly 10/08/2019 1:19 PMYou can drop off cans and single use plastic to be recycled. The most difficult part of recycling for me is remembering to even recycle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Isis Rielly 10/08/2019 1:18 PMEvery time i left a room I turned off the lights to save energy. This helps the enviorment because it is saving electricity!-
Lora Jones 10/09/2019 8:47 PMWe have a nearby source of hydroelectric power with the Folsom Dam. Here is an illustration of how electricity is produced there:
