James's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
High Impact Action Track
Plant Trees
Nature
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
High Impact Action Track
Research Impact Investing
Simplicity
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and deterimine if it is right for me.
Energy
Upgrade My Windows
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service, or organize car sharing with my neighbors, to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 20 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Ditch the Lawn
I will replace my lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape and save the water, money, and time I used to spend cutting the grass.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Upgrade My WindowsHow does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
James Riddle 10/21/2019 10:43 PMI'm trying "Indows" window inserts which preserve the historic character of my house (beveled glass windows that cast amazing rainbows around the house) and allows me to avoid buying PVC frames windows. Starting with just a couple to see how well the work and how much we like them. -
James Riddle 10/21/2019 11:33 AMThis morning ibeslked right passed all the sweets at the breakfast buffet. :) -

James Riddle 10/19/2019 8:14 PMPro tip of the day: was at a kid bday party where they had a pinata. The parents told me they got all the plastic crap play-with-once toys for inside by asking on the local buy-nothing group :) -
James Riddle 10/18/2019 10:46 AMJust got back from travel for work. Telecommuting today, and also buying carbon offsets for my last two trips and next twp trips. It can't buy off my impact/guilt completely, but it's far better than nothing and supporting groups that are doing good work and raising awareness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Choose a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
James Riddle 10/18/2019 10:43 AMIt really bothers me that I'm causing so much emissions for traveling for work (even if it's to attend a WWF Climate Savers meeting!), so it's the least I can to 'offset.' -
James Riddle 10/17/2019 5:11 AMLast day of mtgs in DC. Gotta remember to research and buy carbon offsets when I get home. -
James Riddle 10/16/2019 5:07 AMHeading to a conference today. Brought my travel mug just in case they only have disposable cups.
