REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Tiffany Porter 10/23/2019 7:26 AMI think what has me most worried is the planet my kids will have to live in. I’m also concerned with how I will be able to deal with it when I’m old. I’d say the amount of fossil fuels our family uses in an average week isn’t great. I’m not concerned with waste, because that can be very manageable up to a point. But getting places, I’m trying to change how we go about that with biking, which is easy when the weather and time abides. Time and lack of infrastructure are the main reasons we don’t bike everywhere. If there was a safer way and we as a society weren’t running around like chickens with our heads cut off we could live very sustainably, and I think we’d be happier for it. We’d be healthier, sleep better, breathe better. Would you bike places? What keeps you from biking? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Tiffany Porter 10/23/2019 7:15 AMThe kids are already excited for the tree to grow so they can hang a swing from it. How can that not bring anyone happiness? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Tiffany Porter 10/22/2019 11:16 AMAny and all fruit! That is my goal for next summer. Also tomatoes. I’m very excited about all of these new methods, and how they bring me closer to less waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Tiffany Porter 10/20/2019 2:39 PMI’ve always tried to end my day on a good note, and I think it’s a great thing because in the end I’m happy. Even when days can be really shitty, I know it’s not as bad as it could be because it can always be worse. While I always reflect on my day of how I could’ve done better, it’s nice to find things I’m grateful for. The smallest things can really bring you immense joy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Tiffany Porter 10/17/2019 12:53 PMOverall I feel it addresses the depths of how far something as plain and yet essential food can effect a culture, a people and a globe. I’ve always known that Native Americans respected the land whereas white people just came and wrecked it. But I wasn’t properly taught about the commodities act and really how awful it was. Food is definitely what brings me a lot of happiness. I think that’s why I enjoy cooking so much and then feel just awful when I eat at a fast food restaurant. My body knows it isn’t right. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Tiffany Porter 10/16/2019 4:16 PMLunch has been my hardest meal because I’m alone and used to reading something. The first few weeks were really difficult. I felt really addicted to my phone, but also feeling the need to keep moving. So it’s been really nice to just sit and think, and also enjoy these absolutely beautiful days. Plus the added bonus of having breakfast alone with Andy. It’s like a morning date everyday. Which has been really lovely. I think I’ll keep it up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Tiffany Porter 10/14/2019 10:32 AMI’m going for the perineal herb garden. I’ve managed to kill every herb not planted in the ground. So I’m opting for the herb garden. I know my yard will support it, so if it dies, it will be because of my negligence. But I’m hopeful! I’m also excited because I learned how to dry herbs, so next fall I’ll be ready and it will be even less waste next year. I love how these methods are a domino effect into sustainable living.
