Laurieann's actions
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 120 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 120 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 120 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend 120 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 4:19 AMSalt water intrusion and sea level rise are the biggest water concerns in this area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 4:18 AMI rarely purchase coffee out because of the expense. I make my own coffee at home and take it to work. I need to purchase a reusable to go cup for coffee from Wawa and have it in my car, in case I need to get coffee when traveling. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 4:14 AMConsider -" do I really need it, can I fix it, can I use this in another way" before you discard items or purchase new items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 4:12 AMOur tap water has many problems (brown water, grit, and over chlorination) - we would need to purchase a whole house filtration system to remedy these problems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 4:00 AMOur recycling centers will accept paint, household batteries, abd oil. They gave special days twice a year to accept hazardous household waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 3:56 AMOne example is making your own accessories, using buttons that coordinate with the clothes that you already own (such as button necklaces). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 3:53 AMNext steps are reducing the purchase of items that are unnecessarily packaged (plastic encased boxes for an example). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 3:51 AMThe easiest way is to adjust the preferences on all the printers in the building. It can be encouraged company-wide by using the money saved on a social activity like a cookout for the employees. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Laurieann Phalen 10/23/2019 3:46 AMCreativity allows you to come up with ways to improvise with what you have, instead of needing to have something because you want it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
