We live in the suburbs west of Portland. Today we went into Portland to take the kids to see a play. We ate lunch at the Pine St. Market. It was so refreshing to see mostly reusable items being used (cups, plates, bowls). Those that weren't reusable were compostable and they had recycling and compost collections on site! Also there were many non meat/vegan options. Even living only 25 miles from downtown, you don't see these things very often in suburban restaurants and markets. This really needs to change!

We do not have citywide compost in the city in which I live. So, we do all of our own composting. It is not difficult and we're in the habit of doing it but I was mentioning to my friend yesterday that I miss having chickens to toss those wilty scraps out to! Though the chickens did cost me money in their organic feed and bedding, I felt so much better about giving them the brown bananas that I didn't have a chance to turn into banana bread, the tomatoes that had gotten a bit too soft or the watermelon rind where we just couldn't quite get all of the red! Anyway, not only do I miss those farm fresh eggs I miss my live composters! One of these days we'll get more ladies!!

    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I have had a garden for most of my life. My parents always had a garden and I have continued the tradition. It is so gratifying to use food that I have grown in my meals. I always have fresh herbs growing. Many of them survive all year round. This year I had a very successful tomato production and was able to can at least 20 pints! We had many other successful plants as well including our pumpkin patch and the carrots that the boys planted!!

    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

If I find myself in a store without my bags, I will either carry the items out, use the cart if there are too many and put them directly into my car (or the bags that I left in the car) or I will purchase another reusable bag to use.
