Molly's actions
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Molly O'Brien Hale 10/04/2019 8:36 AMto go containers at work, when i should be using a plate. coffee cups on the weekends and produce bags at the grocery store. I am good about my grocery bags and not using straws, but need to get better about the rest. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Reduce refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Molly O'Brien Hale 10/04/2019 8:34 AMI knew that I had been addicted for a long time, but refused to acknowledge it in term of fixing it. Now that i am not consuming sugar I am currently feeling worse, but know i will feel better in the end -

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Molly O'Brien Hale 9/30/2019 10:59 AMWithout the pollinators we have nothing. The rate at which we are destroying this planet is heartbreaking, we need to make sure that the plants and food are still alive. I believe it is The Cree People who stated "Only after the last tree has been cut down. Only after the last rive has been poisoned. Only after the last fish has been caught. Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Molly O'Brien Hale 9/30/2019 10:55 AMBring able to spend time among the trees is good for the soul. Its a sense of meditation and peace that can't be attained elsewhere. Being surrounded by trees and wildlife brings me hope that there is still good in this world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this idea?
Molly O'Brien Hale 9/30/2019 10:53 AMI completely agree. Knowing where my food came from is really important to me. Not to mention anything from the farmers market lasts 5x longer than the grocery store.
