I will replace inefficient heating and cooling units.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Energy
Install Alternative Energy
I will install alternative energy systems, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Anna Nadon 10/23/2019 9:54 AMThis is already a pretty big part of my daily habit because I need to make sure I drink at least 2 liters of water a day to manage my kidney health and that just isn't sustainable if you have to carry around a bunch of plastic water bottles. The hardest thing I have found is making sure that I can refill my water bottle throughout the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Anna Nadon 10/23/2019 9:53 AMIn more cases, when I don't have a reusable bag handy, I try to either carry out the items I have without a bag (or put them in my purse if they are small), or if a paper bag is an option, I do that as well. I try to make sure I always have reusable bags available in my car.
If I do end up with plastic bags, I try to make sure they get to a designated plastic bag recycling collection point. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Anna Nadon 10/23/2019 9:51 AMThe single-use items I use the most and am actively working to cut out of my life are plastic bags and straws. We have reusable grocery bags that are great (when you remember to bring them) and I recently purchased some steel straws that I can take with me to restaurants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Anna Nadon 10/23/2019 9:49 AMBy going on walks with my friends in our neighborhoods or local nature reserves on days when we have more time (or the weather is nicer). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Upgrade Heating & Cooling UnitsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Anna Nadon 10/23/2019 9:49 AMI'm inspired by the need to leave the world a better place than I found it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Anna Nadon 10/23/2019 9:48 AMMake sure all lights are turned off, set back the temperature on our thermostat when we are not home, and use low flow shower heads and faucets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Anna Nadon 10/21/2019 6:50 AMWe are saving for our wedding and future energy efficiency improvements to our home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Install Alternative EnergyHow is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?
Anna Nadon 10/21/2019 6:49 AMWe are seeing cooler and later summers, longer and colder winters, and far more rain then average. I imagine these patterns will only continue to grow and change what we understand as normal.
