Brian's actions
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day.
High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Brian Morrissette 10/03/2019 12:39 PMThey help produce the food we eat, the scenery we enjoy, and also play important roles in the natural ecosystem around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Brian Morrissette 10/02/2019 10:53 AMI always try and recycle and not to throw away can and bottles that can be redeemed and recycled into raw materials. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Brian Morrissette 10/02/2019 9:40 AMNever knew there were easy ways to stop the flow of junk mail coming to my mailbox. Going to pursue these great avenues to reduce waste in my own life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Brian Morrissette 10/01/2019 3:31 PMIn our area glass has been hard to recycle due to inconvenience of pickup and if it isn't picked up it must be driven over to the recycling center. For me the knowledge of what is recyclable and how clean does it need to be to not be just trash can be hard to evaluate.
