This is a fun challenge.   Really glad I joined.  I have learned a lot.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I don't have curbside recycle so I have to take everything to different places to recycle.   But Fort Collins has a good choice of places to take things - from the Larimer County landfill to other stations around town (that are even open on Sunday).   There are also places to recycle electronics.   Finally, in some cases items can be donated and companies will take advantage of the metals, etc.

I find the actions from the challenge to be inspiring!   Some of these things are actions that I can just take every day but this helps me focus on doing them.   Thanks!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar
    Cristina Mahon 10/14/2019 11:28 AM
I pay more attention to the food - its texture, smell and even how I feel eating it.  That makes me eat slower and savor the food.   I have noticed that I eat less when I do that because my stomach has time to tell my brain that I am full.   Also, I enjoy the food better.   And between those two I have less digestion issues.

How might impact investing help you better live your values?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar

It is a case of putting your money where your mouth is.   If you have some core values following through on where you put your money really makes a difference
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Know My health
How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar
    Cristina Mahon 10/14/2019 11:23 AM
I find that keeping things in perspective helps a great deal in keeping stress in check.   I also use quiet time and doing some of my hobbies as a way to unwind.   Finally walking for me is a great way to release stress.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar
    Cristina Mahon 10/07/2019 7:26 PM
I have made this a permanent habit by putting reusable bottles everywhere in my house, car, work.   By always having one handy and filled I don't reach out for a non-reusable bottle.   I have started carrying an empty water bottle when I go on airplane trips.   That way I can fill it after I go through security and I don't need to buy a water bottle after security.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar
    Cristina Mahon 10/07/2019 7:24 PM
Setting the default printing in the company to two sided can help people make the switch if they are not thinking about it.   It would also help us save paper in the long run.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity Go for a Daily Walk
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar
    Cristina Mahon 10/07/2019 7:22 PM
I find that when I can go for a walk my mind seems freer to think and be creative.   By not focusing on a task but just moving and by doing it somewhere different from where I am working allows me relax, get into an automatic rhythm which frees up my mind and makes it more creative.   It also just puts me in a better mood.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

    Cristina Mahon's avatar
    Cristina Mahon 10/07/2019 7:20 PM
It seems that the normal state of affairs is for things to become more a more complicated and complex.   As we live our daily lives we sometimes add routines or other tasks that had a purpose at one point in time but that we continue to practice well after they are needed.   So taking a step back and asking ourselves how we can simplify our lives or a particular task often requires us to think out of the box and to use our creativity to remove the layers of complexity that naturally build up.
