Candice's actions
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Candice Loveland 10/21/2019 4:34 PMEating more meat uses more resources and increases your carbon footprint. Eating lower on the food chain, reduces your carbon footprint and frees up land and resources that could be used to grow more food for people. People in richer countries eat more meat because it's readily available and affordable. It's easy not think about the true cost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Candice Loveland 10/05/2019 10:14 AMI will start bring more reusable containers with me when I go places and really think hard about whether I really need something before I take it. If I don't have a reusable container with me, I will think hard about whether I really need this item before I buy it. I will also think more about my daily habits, what I do that generates waste, and what I can change to cut that back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Candice Loveland 10/05/2019 10:10 AMA few of my bills still come in the mail. I will switch everything to paperless to reduce how much paper mail I'm getting. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Candice Loveland 10/05/2019 10:09 AMI will always bring my reusable grocery bags with me to the store along with containers for bulk items and additional bags for veggies. I will remember my reusable cup when I get drinks and will stop using disposable stir sticks. I will bring my own containers and silverware when I get take out and reduce the amount of napkins I take. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Candice Loveland 10/05/2019 9:50 AMI will power down my computer when not using it for more than two hours. I will also unplug appliances I'm not currently using and turn my thermostat down a few degrees.
