Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Amara Lopez 10/22/2019 1:15 PMWhen having left over food I will give it to the homeless or use it for the soil in the garden depending on what it is. -
Amara Lopez 10/22/2019 1:10 PMMy challenge is going pretty well, a few days I did not do as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Amara Lopez 10/22/2019 1:10 PMWhen going to stores I select email for my mom as well as encouraging her to get her coupons online instead of mailed -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorKeen Independent Research Foundation conducted a recent study that highlights the disparities in the availability of city contracts and loans to businesses, and how this disparity correlates to owners as people of color. The study showed that Minority businesses enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Amara Lopez 10/22/2019 1:05 PMThere are many differences within our community, our community needs to be more supportive of one another. There are big gaps within income as well as the social status. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Amara Lopez 10/22/2019 12:59 PMI would invest money in a reusable bag. Many places do offer reusable bags for cheap and that is a sufficient way in helping the number decrease of plastic bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Amara Lopez 10/20/2019 9:48 PMI can me more aware of the items I am using on a daily basis, get rid of straws, recycle plastic as well as other items that are recyclable, reduce the use of items that go to the landfills.
