AnnMarie's actions
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/23/2019 9:06 AMReducing the number of days I drive into work by taking public transportation is my small gift to Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/23/2019 9:05 AMHey everybody- switch your Portland General selection to clean energy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/23/2019 9:04 AMI grew up visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium and learning about commercial fishing impacts, making good seafood choices, and taking care of our oceans. I'm mindful of my choices to make sure that when I eat fish, I'm choosing those from the seafood watch list. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/22/2019 11:08 AMThe biggest barrier for me in using reusable bottles is remembering to grab it from my kitchen counter before I leave home each day. I should probably write myself a note and leave it next to my keys so I'm more consistent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/22/2019 11:07 AMBeing outdoors keeps me centered, whether it's at the beach, mountains, forest, or a national park. My favorite place is the beach- salt water and fresh air are good for my soul! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/22/2019 11:04 AMA haiku:
Let's save some green trees
Remember to print both sides
Saving paper- yay!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/21/2019 12:28 PMI've started making a conscientious choice to reduce my use of single use plastics overall. As example, I limit my use of plastic bags in favor of reusable containers. The biggest impact is with school lunches packed for my small humans- instead of sending a sandwich in a bag, we pack it in a reusable container that also houses other foods they pack for the day. They've started taking a refillable bottle to school instead of juice boxes. Small steps but they count! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/17/2019 9:25 AMBeing mindful of my need to decompress and taking time each day to rest, spend quality time with family, and do something I enjoy. I don't succeed every day but overall, I balance life and work pretty well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
AnnMarie Kevorkian Mattie 10/15/2019 12:44 PMNot all plastics and recyclable materials can be placed in the recycle can at home. Some products need to be taken to a recycle center in order to properly dispose.
