Andrew's actions
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
High Impact Action Track
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food
I will cook 2 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Waste
Visit a Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 120 minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend 10 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
High Impact Action Track
Talk To My Friends and Colleagues
Community
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 1 friends and/or colleagues each day about what I learn.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Visit a Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?
Andrew Keough 10/23/2019 6:30 PMAgilyx Recycling Center - I went with about 12 coworkers and we learned all about the innovative ways that this company was helping our species move forward with the recycling of plastics. #circulareconomy Website: https://www.agilyx.com/ -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Andrew Keough 10/22/2019 2:58 PMThe people who are most affected is anyone downwind from gas emitting factories, or generally in populous areas where there is a large amount of gas-powered automobiles.Air pollution pollutes the air we all breathe regardless of life choices, and that degradation of the air quality or increase of harmful particulates causes health issues. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Andrew Keough 10/22/2019 2:55 PMRicher countries generally eat more meat because it is/was seen as a luxury, i.e. when you have extra money you buy meat for your family. In terms of the effect to the planet and people, it impacts land and water use, and increases greenhouse gas emissions, and has been linkedto heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Talk To My Friends and ColleaguesWhat makes you feel connected to your neighborhood, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Andrew Keough 10/18/2019 10:37 AMI feel more connected walking through my neighborhood, chatting it up with passerbys, and visiting and shopping at the local businesses. I think everyone thrives when my positive energy and dollars are spent within a mile of where I live, as it helps us all grow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Andrew Keough 10/16/2019 11:42 AMInstead of taking a trip to Europe this year to relish in their advanced cycling infrastructure, my family decided to bike around Crater Lake on one of their car free Saturdays in September. -
Andrew Keough 10/14/2019 11:14 AMI volunteered at Free Geek over the weekend. Great way to spend part of a Saturday, i.e. helping the e-cycle loop stay continuous. https://www.freegeek.org/ -
Andrew Keough 10/11/2019 9:16 AMCycling makes me happier as a commuter, and for more than the obvious reasons written about in various publications. :-)
1) High degree of commuting control and ‘arrival-time reliability’ 2) Enjoyable levels of sensory stimulation; 3) The ‘feel better’ effects of moderate intensity exercise; and 4) Greater opportunities for social interaction. "Journal of Transport & Health" Vol.14 Sep.2019 <100569> -
Andrew Keough 10/10/2019 8:55 AMAn ode to the spork,
How clever are thee!
A spoon plus a fork
To eat meals with ease
Such a smart combination
Of two simple tools
It's a meal-time sensation
That's easy to use
Now whenever I eat
Some roast beef with my soup
It's not longer a feat
Just a stab then a scoop!
