    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Plastic bags are the biggest challenge to eliminate when shopping for food. Bread almost always comes in plastic, although we have discovered Acme bread made in Berkeley that is in a paper wrapper and sold at the Coop. Baking at home is the best option in reducing plastic. Yogurt and mayonnaise containers used to be a problem and now we make our own at home. Reducing plastic waste is definitely a process!

    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

I don't believe creativity is necessary to live more simply...You just have to say no to buying more stuff! But creativity does help in transforming old stuff into a newer, improved or more beautiful object/gadget...Like making new covers for cushions out of old clothes or repainting an old dresser, rather than buying a new one.

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Plastic bags are a huge problem for us! We have started purchasing bread in paper bags or baking our own and reuse plastic vegetable bags, but still we end up with 1+ plastic bags in the garbage daily. Only shopping at the Coop & no more Trader Joe's or Costco would make the biggest difference, however, it would be much more expensive! Balance is the key!

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

Exercising with friends is much more enjoyable and being in nature for a hike is a fantastic weekend stress reliever after a too busy week!

What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

We have chosen to travel  by car for a vacation during the winter holidays this year, instead of going abroad for a cultural experience. The California coast or desert can be warm and sunny in the winter months. In the future, deciding on shorter air travel distances and continuing to donate to offset the carbon footprint for longer flights are strategies for holidays to come.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

We have been composting for years! Very little food goes in the garbage since we rarely eat meat, use up our left overs and try to keep track of foods that could spoil soon. I am new to worm composting in bins, which is a more exacting science. They eat up all of our banana peels and some fruit cores. The castings go into our house plants and raised bed garden.
