High Impact Action Track
Research Impact Investing
Simplicity
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and deterimine if it is right for me.
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
High Impact Action Track
Install Alternative Energy
Energy
I will install alternative energy systems, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with bioplastic or durable options.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Simplicity
Research My Investment Portfolio
I will find out what stocks and bonds are in my investment account portfolio to determine if they align with my values (e.g. environmental, social responsibility, community).
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Lora Jones 10/09/2019 7:44 PMPlastic bags are the biggest challenge to eliminate when shopping for food. Bread almost always comes in plastic, although we have discovered Acme bread made in Berkeley that is in a paper wrapper and sold at the Coop. Baking at home is the best option in reducing plastic. Yogurt and mayonnaise containers used to be a problem and now we make our own at home. Reducing plastic waste is definitely a process! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Lora Jones 10/07/2019 8:32 PMI don't believe creativity is necessary to live more simply...You just have to say no to buying more stuff! But creativity does help in transforming old stuff into a newer, improved or more beautiful object/gadget...Like making new covers for cushions out of old clothes or repainting an old dresser, rather than buying a new one. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Lora Jones 10/07/2019 8:25 PMPlastic bags are a huge problem for us! We have started purchasing bread in paper bags or baking our own and reuse plastic vegetable bags, but still we end up with 1+ plastic bags in the garbage daily. Only shopping at the Coop & no more Trader Joe's or Costco would make the biggest difference, however, it would be much more expensive! Balance is the key! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Lora Jones 10/05/2019 10:51 AMExercising with friends is much more enjoyable and being in nature for a hike is a fantastic weekend stress reliever after a too busy week! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Lora Jones 10/05/2019 10:45 AMWe have chosen to travel by car for a vacation during the winter holidays this year, instead of going abroad for a cultural experience. The California coast or desert can be warm and sunny in the winter months. In the future, deciding on shorter air travel distances and continuing to donate to offset the carbon footprint for longer flights are strategies for holidays to come. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Lora Jones 10/02/2019 9:48 PMWe have been composting for years! Very little food goes in the garbage since we rarely eat meat, use up our left overs and try to keep track of foods that could spoil soon. I am new to worm composting in bins, which is a more exacting science. They eat up all of our banana peels and some fruit cores. The castings go into our house plants and raised bed garden.
