  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
People are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations. What is your chief motivation for foraging?

I actually go foraging twice a year! I go mid-spring towards the mountains to gather morels (for those who don't know, these are mushrooms). My husband and I collect about 5 pounds worth and we cut some up and freeze them for soups, we also dehydrate some and add them to our breakfast scrambles and again soups/dinners. We also go late summer/early fall and go huckleberry picking! We love huckleberries and we are so lucky to be close to places where they grow naturally. To answer this question more directly, my chief motivation for foraging is for a source of food. We find it is a lot cheaper (more work though!) to go out and enjoy some time outside and pick our own then to buy at the grocery store. We might look into selling to our local chefs and local natural grocery stores in the future though!

    Simplicity Track my Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

I noticed pretty quickly that I spend way too much on coffee. Everyday, I would/will spend approximately 5-10 dollars on coffees each DAY! I know there is cheaper ways of getting my daily dose of caffeine, and one of the changes I have started to make is bringing my own mug which reduces the cost for drip coffee. I have also been trying to brew my own from home and bringing it with me. The last thing I have tried changing is what I order, for example, I mostly order drips or americanos instead of the mochas and lattes, as well as, only ordering the small size instead of medium or large. Not only do these options help me save money, I am reducing the number of paper cups I use each day and I am saving on unneeded calories from all the sugars found in the sweet coffees.

Day 16: I am grateful for the ability to up-cycle thrift finds into something beautiful that can be used again (one of my favorite hobbies), the ability to sleep on a warm, soft bed, and video games which is my way of staying connected with my friends from college.

Day 15: I am so grateful for (no-kill) animal shelters/fosters who take care of all the animals I wish I could take home and love forever, I am super grateful for my adorable nephew, who brings me joy and happiness every time I see him, and I am grateful for chicken tortilla soup (my favorite comfort food)!

I had the opportunity to spend a whole day at Lagoon, and I'll tell you what, my feet hurt from how much walking we did! Definitely exceeded my goal of 20 minutes, but it was a beautiful day outside and I experienced something new and different which was a nice change of pace!
