Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

I will spend minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Amy Jackson 10/15/2019 11:21 AMI have been composting for about a year now, though use municipal collection instead of composting in my own back yard. I have been trying to transition away from the compostable bags to line my bin, as they seem to be unnecessary. I don't mind washing out the bin, though I've found that my family is more likely to use the compost bin if there is a liner. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Amy Jackson 10/07/2019 12:04 PMThere are seven forms of sustainable fashion, according to http://www.greenstrategy.se/sustainable-fashion/seven-forms-of-sustainable-fashion/ I have been purchasing the majority of clothing for myself and my family second-hand for well over a year now. I'm still concerned about the carbon cost of shipping, since I use the app Poshmark to make shopping less of a burden (I can sort by brand, size, style, color, etc.which really beats shopping in an actual thrift store). I do feel like I am still making an impact, especially modeling this behavior for my kids. One of the seven forms I found most interesting is "high quality and timeless designs." While this is somewhat instinctive--I especially apply it to shoes already. I appreciate the reminder that fads and cheap fabrics have a higher cost due to the nearly disposable nature of the product, which is another good lesson in sustainability and fiscal responsibility that I can share with my kids.
