Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Install a Toilet Tank Bank
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Think before you flush!  not only is flushing toxic substances terrible, like expired pills or grease or harmful cleaners, we are what we consume.  there are so many toxins from our own waste stream (medications, etc.) that are showing up in the great lakes and affecting wildlife.  -Just something to think about.
Also, tiny bits of plastic slip into the waterways all the time, especially the lightweight thin bags that blow away.  You can catch them before they end up in the storm sewer or creeks!  Go chase garbage:)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

Oh boy, I had to dig into my sleep bank on Monday because I stayed up late to watch the election results.  I did not achieve my goal of extra sleep for this day but I am happy that I have been banking up from past days.

I am trying to think ahead to upcoming events and how we can influence the elimination of single-use plastic.  I still find vendors are surprised when you ask for them not to include things like straws.  One thing we continue to uphold is -no plastic water bottles!  We try to get metal cans that are more recyclable than plastic for beverage orders.  Best is when we get pitchers of tap water and re-usable glasses.

I didn't check in for a few days but I didnt forget to reject plastics, reduce my water use and re-think my bus stop.  I also had time to discuss the challenges with family at the holiday dinner table
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Work from Home
It takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?

I have to carve out a space that has a good work vibe when I am at home so I can really be productive.  I have surprised myself with my ability to be very productive but it is a different kind of work than when I am in the office and able to collaborate more directly.  I still value the face to face interactions
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

slow down water use, including greywater systems.  I have this at my home where water is used more than one time before it re-enters the sewer or ground
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Community Raise Money For a Nonprofit
How do/can Ecochallenge.org programs help you develop a stronger sense of community?

This weekend is sit we all of my families to reflect on what were thankful for.  I'll be discussing the importance of climate action now and whether they spend time or money I'll ask my family to support Environment Hamilton or other stewardship groups.

Foraging for plants and herbs for the thanks giving table is fun  but I am mindful of the 10 % rule.  It would be devastating to wipe out a healthy wild crop.
