Also, tiny bits of plastic slip into the waterways all the time, especially the lightweight thin bags that blow away. You can catch them before they end up in the storm sewer or creeks! Go chase garbage:)

Christi's actions
Simplicity
Research My Investment Portfolio
I will find out what stocks and bonds are in my investment account portfolio to determine if they align with my values (e.g. environmental, social responsibility, community).
Water
Install a Toilet Tank Bank
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water each day by installing a toilet tank bank.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
High Impact Action Track
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food
I will cook 3 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with bioplastic or durable options.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 2 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support Ecochallenge.org or another nonprofit.
Nature
Organize a Course
I will organize one of Ecochallenge.org's discussion courses, such as 'Reconnecting with Earth', with my family, friends, coworkers, or classmates.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Install a Toilet Tank BankName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Christi Hodgson 10/23/2019 7:13 AMThink before you flush! not only is flushing toxic substances terrible, like expired pills or grease or harmful cleaners, we are what we consume. there are so many toxins from our own waste stream (medications, etc.) that are showing up in the great lakes and affecting wildlife. -Just something to think about.
Also, tiny bits of plastic slip into the waterways all the time, especially the lightweight thin bags that blow away. You can catch them before they end up in the storm sewer or creeks! Go chase garbage:) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Christi Hodgson 10/23/2019 7:03 AMOh boy, I had to dig into my sleep bank on Monday because I stayed up late to watch the election results. I did not achieve my goal of extra sleep for this day but I am happy that I have been banking up from past days. -
Christi Hodgson 10/20/2019 4:52 PMShopping in the clearance section at the grocery store is waste recovery and cost savings .

Christi Hodgson 10/18/2019 1:11 PMI am trying to think ahead to upcoming events and how we can influence the elimination of single-use plastic. I still find vendors are surprised when you ask for them not to include things like straws. One thing we continue to uphold is -no plastic water bottles! We try to get metal cans that are more recyclable than plastic for beverage orders. Best is when we get pitchers of tap water and re-usable glasses. -
Christi Hodgson 10/16/2019 12:50 PMI didn't check in for a few days but I didnt forget to reject plastics, reduce my water use and re-think my bus stop. I also had time to discuss the challenges with family at the holiday dinner table -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?
Christi Hodgson 10/16/2019 12:45 PMI have to carve out a space that has a good work vibe when I am at home so I can really be productive. I have surprised myself with my ability to be very productive but it is a different kind of work than when I am in the office and able to collaborate more directly. I still value the face to face interactions -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Christi Hodgson 10/16/2019 12:43 PMslow down water use, including greywater systems. I have this at my home where water is used more than one time before it re-enters the sewer or ground -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Raise Money For a NonprofitHow do/can Ecochallenge.org programs help you develop a stronger sense of community?
Christi Hodgson 10/12/2019 4:14 AMThis weekend is sit we all of my families to reflect on what were thankful for. I'll be discussing the importance of climate action now and whether they spend time or money I'll ask my family to support Environment Hamilton or other stewardship groups. -
Christi Hodgson 10/12/2019 4:03 AMHappy Thanksgiving to those Canadians celebrating this weekend -
Christi Hodgson 10/12/2019 4:02 AMForaging for plants and herbs for the thanks giving table is fun but I am mindful of the 10 % rule. It would be devastating to wipe out a healthy wild crop.
