Dezeray's actions
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 20 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Dezeray Hetchler 10/02/2019 7:53 AMAt my apartment, the water tastes horrible, like chlorine and it think that's an issue with a lot of people living in cities. My roommates and I invested a water purifier so now we all use reusable bottles instead of buying plastic water bottles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Dezeray Hetchler 10/02/2019 7:51 AMBy not buying so much new clothing, not eating out as often, and using reusable bags more often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Dezeray Hetchler 10/02/2019 7:50 AMTry to carry in my hands, otherwise I would have to accept a plastic bag. I could fold up a reusable bag in my backpack and purse so I always have one available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Dezeray Hetchler 10/02/2019 7:49 AMPlastic, greenhouse gases, people driving everywhere, food waste, and the extreme killing of fish and sharks in out oceans -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Dezeray Hetchler 10/02/2019 7:47 AMBy creating ways to reuse, or take things no longer in use and turn it into something useful instead of going and buying new things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Dezeray Hetchler 10/02/2019 7:46 AMBy trying to convince my place of volunteering to use reusable cups instead of plastic.
