Danielle's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 2 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.

Danielle Henry 10/20/2019 6:03 PMIn the grocery stores in Canada, you are charged $.05 for every bag you use and nothing if you bring your own bag. Hoping the United States starts these practices soon to help encourage folks to bring their own reusable bags to the store. -
Danielle Henry 10/20/2019 6:01 PMNeed a tip on how to keep the stainless steel reusable straws from rusting. Anyone have any suggestions?-
Christina D'Abreo 10/21/2019 6:35 AMFDA food grade 18/8 stainless steel metal straws should not rust at all. What brand of SS straws are you using. With straws, the trick is wash with soap and hot water immediately after use and drip dry! Hope this works for you.

Danielle Henry 10/20/2019 8:42 AMIn an effort to save some of my old highly used towels and sheets from going to the landfill, I donated them to my County Animal Shelter. They are always looking for those kind of items. Win Win! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Danielle Henry 10/17/2019 8:44 AMIn an effort to avoid forgetting my reusable bag I purposely leave one in my car, my husband's car, at my office, in my briefcase and in my suitcase. If I ever end up in a situation where I need a reusable bag and don't have one, I will use a plastic bag but will be sure to recycle it afterwards. Even when I am Christmas shopping I am sure to bring along lots of reusable bags to store my purchases. -
Danielle Henry 10/16/2019 5:32 PMBe sure to avoid putting plastic bags with your other plastic recycling. The plastic bags get caught up in the equipment at the recycler. Public Supermarkets recycle plastic bags right at the store. They also recycle the Styrofoam trays that hold your raw meat, seafood and produce. -

Danielle Henry 10/16/2019 5:28 PMGroupon has great sales on reusable straws. For those of you that need stocking stuffers I encourage you to check it out! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Danielle Henry 10/16/2019 5:25 PMRecycling has actually become more difficult where I live. My county no longer accepts glass bottles of any sort so I now have to store my glass in a separate container and find a place that accepts it so I can transport it myself. After researching more on recycling I have come to find out that the haulers can no longer make money from glass recycling hence why it has been discontinued in my county as an acceptable item. I've also learned that recycling sometimes is restricted to the size of the recycled item. The rules in each county can be tricky to follow. I've decided to educate myself and then educate the homeowners association where I live so we can all be responsible recyclers in our community. I also am trying to educate myself on specialty recyclable materials that can only be collected at certain places such as cell phones and other electronics, printer cartridges, Styrofoam, plastic bags, etc. It's all about educating myself and spreading my knowledge to others. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Danielle Henry 10/15/2019 5:29 AMMany do not like tap water and find bottled water is a safe option. The good news is that if you have a reusable bottle on hand, many places have filtered water readily available for you to fill up your reusable bottle. I myself have taken an empty reusable bottle through airport security and walked up to a bar or inside a restaurant and asked them to fill up my reusable bottle with ice and water. They are always happy to help out. I have also attended work conferences at hotels and they too will fill up your empty reusable bottle with water. Many power plants I visit have a 5 gallon water bottle available in the break room areas which is another place you can refill your reusable bottle. It seems to be getting easier and easier to avoid the use of water bottles by just bringing your own reusable bottle. Now remembering to bring it wherever you go..... that's another story! I focus on making this a positive habit daily.
