Leif's actions
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Create Your Own Action
Learn about climate change impact on coral reefs.
I will spend one to two hours learning about climate change impact on coral reefs. The oceans are the heat sink of the world, they slow down the full effects of greenhouse gas warming of the atmosphere. Coral reefs are at the front line of being impacted by global warming and are currently one of the most threatened ecosystems on Earth.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Simplicity
Research My Investment Portfolio
I will find out what stocks and bonds are in my investment account portfolio to determine if they align with my values (e.g. environmental, social responsibility, community).
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 0 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Health
Reduce refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
High Impact Action Track
Research Impact Investing
Simplicity
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and deterimine if it is right for me.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Leif Halverson 10/24/2019 1:24 PMIt is only relatively recently (12k years) that our species shifted to an agrarian system as the primary means of food production. Harari's Sapiens gives a fairly critical review of what that shift entailed for all of us humans. And these general implications have only been further compounded by the more modern shift from agriculture proper to agribusiness. Interestingly enough, the populations of people in northern MN that seek to turn back the clock by way of food sovereignty have an opportunity to actually do so given their apparent (from the video) access to wilderness. The domestic inhabitants of typical American suburbia have less access and thus less actual ability to reclaim food sovereignty in a massively measurable way. Returning to Sapiens, it is genetically impossible to reverse the First Revolution - The Cognitive Revolution. Sci-Fi has often toyed with the notion that the Third Revolution - The Scientific Revolution could be wiped out by a global catastrophe - human made or otherwise. But what of the Second Revolution - The Agricultural Revolution? Do we have an option to undo that one? At what cost? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?
Leif Halverson 10/24/2019 1:04 PMThe auditwas surprisingly easy to do, but the recommendations are substantially more difficult to achieve.
