  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

We now have a large canvas grocery bag with small cloth bags inside, next to the front door so we can grab it when going to the grocery store. The challenge is when I pick up a few things on the way home. We're lucky because we literally live right across the street from a grocery store so I only have to awkwardly carry items without a bag for about 600 feet. I may just add light reusable bag to my work briefcase so I can get a few more things on the way home.

    Health More Fruits and Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

We have gone apple picking twice in the last 3 weeks, bringing home 20+ pounds of apples each time. So, we've had to eat at least a few apples a day to make sure we're not wasting any. I have to say, it is ideal taste testing the apples in the orchard so you know you are picking ripe and delicious fruit. No mealy apples in this home!

5 days left! I’m doing my remaining one-time challenges this weekend!

I am at the Getting to Zero Forum this week. It is a conference focused in aligning how we produce and use energy with the earth’s carrying capacity. A lot of big organizations and consultancies are asking “how do we get people to take collective actions that are good for us and the planet”.  They all need to sign up for the EcoChallenge and see how we do it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity De-Clutter My Home
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I have to be honest. Our home isn't really that cluttered but I will say that my past experiments with extreme waste reduction (e.g. 1 cubic ft. of waste per year for 2 years) has made it harder to throw things out, which in many ways is a good thing. The challenge is that I end up with all sorts of things I don't need or want and don't know what to do with. So, I am going to use this challenge to slowly find a way to declutter without just throwing those things away.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

I grew up in a meatless household and did not eat any meat until after college. At this point I don't eat meat and eat fish very rarely. I do however joke that cheese is my "meat". So, am using this challenge as an opportunity to go "meatless" for most of my meals and see how it feels.

I am very excited to see that we have 232 team members on the FIRST DAY of the EcoChallenge! It took us a week and a half to get more than 100 participants in our very first WSP EcoChallenge a year and a half ago. Our goal is to grow to 10% of all WSP USA staff by this time next year.

There are over 4700 and 500 teams already signed up for the EcoChallenge and we know from past experience that those numbers will at least double by the end of the competition so we want to continue growing our team. One thing you can to TODAY is ask 2 coworkers to sign up and show them how to do it. One of the biggest barriers for new participants is just figuring out how it works and what the EcoChallenge is. A little help from someone who has done it before goes a long ways!
