Nicholas's actions
High Impact Action Track
Install Alternative Energy
Energy
I will install alternative energy systems, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters.
High Impact Action Track
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food
I will cook 1 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
High Impact Action Track
Stay on the Ground
Transportation
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
High Impact Action Track
Plant Trees
Nature
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature
Leave No Trace
I will practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace when doing nature activities alone or with family and friends.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/15/2019 7:41 PMMy family took a train to Florida instead of flying. It took longer and was more inconvenient, but not that bad. For the future, I can either drive, take a train, or even a boat to get places. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/15/2019 7:39 PMI use plastic bags, vegetable bags, plastic cups, and plastic packaging a lot of the time. I can substitute reusable bags for the plastic bags and vegetable bags and use s reusable cup instead of a plastic one. I can down the use of plastic packaging by buying foods in bulk and putting it in reusable containers when I packed my lunch. That will help me to not use plastic packaging with every packed meal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/15/2019 7:35 PMIt could be peaceful and make me feel like I did something good for my mental health. For my physical health it can produce shade and fresh air. For my spiritual health it help me in the sense of feeling they I am helping to preserve God’s creation of the Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Install Alternative EnergyHow is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/15/2019 7:32 PMI do not know if it is related to climate change but it has been staying hotter longer after summer and the winters lasts longer in spring. It seems as if the seasons have shifted as a whole almost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/15/2019 7:31 PMI can help my mom cook or if Im busy I can ask her to do her best to use the entire vegetable for the food she cooks. This will be a small change but everything helps and it could inspire my family to make a change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/10/2019 6:23 AMI use plastic straw, cups, and utensils almost every day. This can easily be changed by me using reusable ones which I have at my house. This is an easy cash’s that can make a difference or maybe inspire others to also. I need to make this a daily habit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Nicholas Giannetta 10/04/2019 6:21 AMYes, I feel I need to stop using so much plastic and pick up litter when I see it.
