Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Waste
Visit a Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 5:04 PMCreate reusable bins for specific food items or other things. Reuse plastic bags for art projects, waste bins, or even a shopping trip. Refuse plastic straws and bags as much as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 5:03 PMI feel like its is hard to understand the impacts purchases and waste have on us because we don't necessarily see the damage we are creating. When I took my daycare kids to the landfill, they right after wanted to start recycling better and reusing as much as possible. I think it is important to teach everyone about this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 5:00 PMI used plastic bags, however since I have started using reusable bags. I find them more efficient and easier to use. Then I don't have a garbage build up in my house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 4:59 PMI visited landfill organization with my early learning centre kids back home. We learned about the harms of wasting does, so we decided to go and visit a landfill and see what it actually looks like! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 4:55 PMI reuse my water bottle everyday. It is cheaper than to buy a case of disposable bottles and it is super easy to refill/ wash when needed. I also find it way more sanitary then the rest. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 4:54 PMWhen I shop, I use my own bags from home to carry food items home. I use bags such as a thermal bag or reusable bags. If I had forgotten bags at home and needed one, I would accept a disposable one, but I would continue to reuse the bag through other shopping trips. Me and my roommates actually collect disposable bags if we get/ find some and use them for other productive ideas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Samantha Froude 10/01/2019 4:51 PMPrior to moving here I had searched for sarcan that accepts plastic and glass bottles. Since my roommates and I have moved in, we have started recycling all of our recycling and will soon bring them in once we have a few bags ready to go.
