Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
jess flannery 10/22/2019 11:08 AMDepending on where you're located, sometime tap water is not a healthy option. Personally, though, the water filters around campus and the clean water around campus make using a reusable water bottle the best option for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
jess flannery 10/22/2019 11:07 AMCarrying around a reusable mug can be hard if you dont have a lid handy, or if you're not near a bathroom/sink to wash it out before putting it in your backpack. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
jess flannery 10/22/2019 11:06 AMRecently, instead of getting rid of old clothing, I've been cutting up shirts/sweatshirts into rags and have been using them to clean my apartment rather than spraying cleaner on wasteful paper towels -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
jess flannery 10/22/2019 11:05 AMSince starting this ecochallenge, I know keep a resuable bag inside my backpack. I also reuse paper bags if I have to buy them from time to time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
jess flannery 10/22/2019 11:04 AMAt universities, I think two-sided printing should be a requirement for students and teachers.
