REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Shannon de Beus 9/30/2019 2:03 AMWhile I understand that the energy we use for our homes and cars are probably the most destructive, the most apparent issue I see on a daily basis is single-use plastics, and the incredible amount of that plastic that is not disposed of properly. The amount of bottles and plastic wraps / bags I see on streets and sidewalks is just unbelievable. I'm adding a challenge to pick up plastic and other trash wherever I go. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Shannon de Beus 9/30/2019 2:00 AMI find that the more time I spend outdoors, the more appreciative I am of the area around me. While I live in a large Dutch city, the opportunities for 'green time' are fantastic - parks, lakes, forested areas - the possibilities are endless. By choosing new paths often in my daily dog walks and (usually) bi-weekly bike rides I'm able to discover even more beautiful areas to enjoy.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Work-Life BalanceHow might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Shannon de Beus 9/30/2019 1:57 AMI think this is a great challenge - definitely easier said than done!
A good work-life balance allows us to enjoy more and stress less, by concentrating on the situation at hand (mindfulness). Mindfulness in turn gives us the ability focus more on our surroundings, and be observant and active in making changes to better the world around us.
