Benjamin's actions

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion

I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I personally only buy sandals now from OluKai, an online company that specializes in fairtrade practices and distributions. I met one of the founders in Hawaii on vacation recently and ever since then I've slowly sought out new sustainable niche clothing items for myself. However I believe expressing oneself should always transcend clothing, if we're going to evolve as a race, we need to start thinking beyond middle school levels of who's wearing the newest basketball shoes.

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

This one's turned into one of my favorites in the morning. As a younger man suiting up could take north of an entire hour as I lazed about. Nowadays I have my time so well managed that I can go from bed alarm to shower to made lunch to full suit and shave in under 30 minutes. This one's not just environmentally friendly, this is 'you' friendly as it gives you a TON of time back that would otherwise be spent being slow/lethargic about your day.

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

The biggest push for myself in this direction also it turned out has saved me over $300 in my budget just last year in that I have purchased an entire set of permanent silverware/drinkware/dining ware that was sustainably made/bpa free etc. When I calculated the amount of starbucks/gas station trips in 2018 vs 2017 it was an enormous amount of savings.
