High Impact Action Track
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Health
I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Create Your Own Action
Product Repurposing
This challenge is to find a way to repurpose what at first glance is considered waste, or unusable. My goal is to repurpose at least one item a day to help reduce landfill waste.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Energy
Replace Manual Thermostats
I will replace manual thermostats with programmable ones.
Health
Learn More about Food Deserts
I will spend 10 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Renee Clement 10/23/2019 2:04 PMReflecting on the challenge, I think if anything, reading about all of the different types of challenges was a good reminder of the large and small things we can do to make an impact. Seeing the numbers add up each day has been a real motivator to see just how high we could get them. -
Renee Clement 10/23/2019 2:00 PMLast day of the challenge. Excited about all the things this group did and the company as a whole!! -
Renee Clement 10/21/2019 10:21 AMOnly a couple of days left. This week I’m doing an overnighter during some of my back to back towns that I’m travelling in. This will help to reduce my mileage by over 300 miles. While I used to come home every night, I try and do this type of coordination to cut down on the amount of mileage I’m doing. Good for the environment, good for my car. -
Renee Clement 10/20/2019 3:29 PMToday I invested in a set of stainless steel drinking straws with a straw cleaner. -

Renee Clement 10/18/2019 12:56 PMI've gone the whole week having my son carpool home from his track meets to reduce the amount I have to use my car. I have also suggested to my son that he start a recycling project at his school when I found out they don't have convenient bins to use. Will see how that plays out. -
Renee Clement 10/17/2019 7:06 PMI asked my 3 year old what she thinks recycling means. She said, “taking all the garbage to the green bin.” When I asked my 15 year old son, he said “not pissing you off.” Hahahaha-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Renee Clement 10/16/2019 5:43 PMIncorporating the “R”s into my lifestyle is not only ongoing, but something I can improve on. The best way is to reduce spending. That will automatically “resize” and “refuse.” Unnecessary waste in my life. I already try to repurpose items, and recycle everything I can. -
Renee Clement 10/15/2019 2:06 PMMeal prepping to make large batches of food using some produce we picked. Getting hungry just thinking about it.
