Christine's actions
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service, or organize car sharing with my neighbors, to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 15 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 15 minute(s) each day.
High Impact Action Track
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Waste
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Christine Caruso 10/22/2019 2:40 PMThe local Metro collection events that happen in different neighborhoods each year where they take light bulbs, old paint, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Christine Caruso 10/09/2019 3:24 PMTry to walk outside even if it is for a few extra blocks before jumping on MAX to go home. I sometimes get off a mile before my house and walk from there if it's a nice day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHigh Impact Action Track Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Christine Caruso 10/09/2019 3:19 PMStraws are something I often forgo and just drink out of the cup. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Christine Caruso 10/09/2019 3:18 PMI often do a ride sharing service with friends to weekend events. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Christine Caruso 9/17/2019 2:37 PMMy trash collection is actually much smaller than I suspected it would be but it is mostly plastic packaging. I will be more aware of options to reduce plastic packaging for things I buy.-
Emily Volpert 10/04/2019 10:12 AMOnce I put something in the trash, I don't see how it is processed through the waste system. Without that awareness, I don't know the impact of throwing something away.
