Claire's actions
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 40 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 60 minute(s)
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 6 meatless meal(s) and/or 6 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Claire Burwell 10/22/2019 9:42 AMSingle use coffee cups are accessible and disposable. It's difficult for me to get in the habit of using a reusable coffee mug because I have a "camping mentality" that tells myself to always pack and travel as light as possible. I still struggle not reaching for the single use coffee cups, but I know in the long-run I'll be satisfied with the decision I made. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Claire Burwell 10/22/2019 9:39 AMMeat is a luxury for people in low-income countries, and therefore, isn't as prevalent nor worked into daily diets. Eating meat, especially cow meat, affects our planet by releasing methane gas into the atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Claire Burwell 10/19/2019 12:55 PMI get iced tea throughout the day while on campus, and I could definitely start carrying around one plastic cup and getting it refilled instead of getting a new cup every time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Claire Burwell 10/19/2019 12:54 PMI'm much more aware of my surroundings and connected with people around me now that I've limited my social media usage. I'm also more conservative about which apps I spend time on and making time in-person with the people I love. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Claire Burwell 10/19/2019 12:53 PMOne of my best friends at WashU (Helena Epstein) is a fitness instructor at the AC and teaches spin and yoga sculpt classes throughout the week. It's great because now all of my friends have an excuse to hit the gym, and exercising with your friends makes the overall experience much more enjoyable.
