Alex's actions
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
High Impact Action Track
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food
I will cook 2 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 15 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 21 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 3.44 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Alex Brown 10/23/2019 10:21 AMI forget to bring reusable bags fairly often. If I've only picked up a few things, I'll just carry them out without a bag. My local coop has recently started using compostable bags rather than plastic bags, which is great because I can then re-use them for composting. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Alex Brown 10/23/2019 7:59 AMUnplug small appliances when not being used, take shorter showers, look for items that are more energy efficient when making a new purchase. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Alex Brown 10/21/2019 8:39 AMBestbuy recycles most electronics, which can't be put in city recycling bins. I have a broken microwave, they'll even take that and recycle it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Alex Brown 10/21/2019 8:33 AMMy most commonly used single-use item are zip-lock bags. We found some good reusable bags as an alternative. I wonder if there's a good way to reduce waste from packaging of things like granola bars (without cutting out convenient snaks)?
