REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Lisa Bello 10/12/2019 10:59 AMIn my township, the largest form of environmental degradation has been the removal of trees and fields in order to build town houses strip malls, convenience stores, and petrol stations. The wild life has lost much of its habitat and many have become victims of the roadways. Many older residents have had to relocate as their home's properties have been bordered by these town homes and strip malls. Our own house is among the last of a small cluster of older homes that are now surrounded by these new builds. Those who have already moved could not afford to purchase a home in the new builds that originally squeezed them out and have had to relocate out of town. The noise and light pollution has increased and also had affect on the wild life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Choose a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Lisa Bello 10/09/2019 1:43 PMUsing an air miles calculator such as https://www.airmilescalculator.com/ to calculate my CO2 offset requirements made purchasing offsets for my personal travel very easy. I really like purchasing from https://www.terrapass.com/ because it allows me to print a certificate showing the offset which is fantastic for gift giving! Plus they have gift cards that I can purchase to help encourage others to offset their travel as well.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Visit a Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?
Lisa Bello 10/04/2019 10:54 AMSome coworkers and I had the opportunity to tour Wheelabrator, our local waste-to-energy plant. It was fascinating to learn about the plant's history and their role in reducing our negative environmental impact. It is AMAZING how much waste we crate on a daily basis!
Here are a few fast facts about Wheelabrator:- 190,678 tons (172,980 tonnes) of waste processed in 2018
- 500 tons (453 tonnes) of waste processed per day
- 12,230 homes powered
- 14 MW energy generation capacity
- 185,971 barrels of oil used for power saved annually
- 55,968 tons (50,773 tonnes) of coal used for power saved annually
