Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

It’s been a very busy three weeks, and I did not get to complete all my selected challenges. The good news is, we don’t have to stop these habits or give up these one/time improvements just because the EcoChallenge is over! ALSO, get ready for our new and improved office recycling station: coming (very) soon!

    Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Amber Nobe's avatar
    Amber Nobe 10/23/2019 10:24 PM
Pollinators are responsible for a majority of the healthy foods we like to eat and for the beautiful plant life in our ecosystem. Though I did not plant any new plants in the yard this season, it’s definitely on the docket for next spring: out with the front yard “grass” and in with the native plant species! This helps both to support pollinators and prevent runoff.

    Energy Upgrade My Windows
How does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

We bought our 100-year-old house for many reasons, one being that the most sustainable building is one that already exists. But, it doesn’t have great energy performance. We put in some weather stripping last year, but we need to update it. I did not get to this challenge during the actual EcoChallenge but will definitely do it soon because we really notice when doors and windows are sealed well to keep heat in.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Where are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?

    Amber Nobe's avatar
    Amber Nobe 10/23/2019 10:14 PM
There are no bodies of water near us or storm drains on our street, so I often wonder where all the surface water goes (other than the giant puddle at the end of our driveway). Mulching prevents runoff and keeps your plants warm in winter. I did not get around to completing this challenge during the actual EcoChallenge, but it’s on the to do list for this upcoming sunny weekend!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Meditate
What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

    Amber Nobe's avatar
    Amber Nobe 10/19/2019 11:46 PM
I’ve been meditating on four things: how I’m feeling physically, how I’m feeling emotionally, what my current thoughts are, and things I am thankful for. Checking in on each of these things everyday has helped me recognize patterns I otherwise missed and practice gratitude.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Amber Nobe's avatar
    Amber Nobe 10/19/2019 11:41 PM
I said no to fast fashion a few years ago, but I think I could do a better job of extending the life of my current wardrobe by taking good care of the materials, as I tend to be hard in the pieces I really like. It helps to keep things “fresh” by looking for ideas of how to combine and style existing pieces in new ways.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Replace Manual Thermostats
How do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for programmable ones will positively impact your life?

    Amber Nobe's avatar
    Amber Nobe 10/13/2019 3:12 PM
Our house is very old and didn’t have a sophisticated thermostat. With a smart thermostat, we don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn it down at night or before we leave the house.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Amber Nobe's avatar
    Amber Nobe 10/08/2019 9:14 PM
When we drive, we move quickly to the arterial streets. When we walk, we’re slowly exploring the side streets and parks, observing for longer, and interacting with people. I love walking around the park in fall and seeing and hearing the soccer practices and games.

We watched the documentary “Chasing Coral” at lunch today, which was interesting and depressing. I think the most useful information was that humans are somewhat shielded from the experience of global warming because most of the extra heat is absorbed by the oceans (to devastating effect). This is a helpful  bit of info for discussing climate change with people who may be dismissive. Without the oceans, we’d be experiencing global warming more intensely day to day—which we really don’t want.
