After taking a while to understand how the EcoChallege works, I'll be more engaged in next year and tailoring custom Daily Challeges that fit specific ways I know I could do better to change my habits.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Recycle Everything I Can
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Jeryl Aman's avatar
    Jeryl Aman 10/23/2019 11:25 AM
Small scrap miscellaneous metals is the toughest to recycle as the weekly collection does not take them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

Reprogrammed our washer to have the Default Normal wash setting be Cold.  We almost always wash everything on cold anyway.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

Our solid waste has fallen dramatically once we started composting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Choose a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Jeryl Aman 10/22/2019 1:24 PM
Cost of a carbon offset was less expensive than I expected - though my flights for work are of short duration. Wonder if we should build offsets into our reimburseable expenses?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

We'd been getting the Restoration Hardware catagloue for years, and they are a huge waste of paper.  Finally logged on to ask them to stop sending us it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

Going on the Recycling tour last year was eye-opening to learn better practices at recycling materials.  And knowing the Black P5 material can't be recycled makes me hesitant to purchase food that is contained in it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

Got a handful or snacks at lunch.  Didn't have a bag on me, so I just carried them in my hands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

    Jeryl Aman's avatar
    Jeryl Aman 10/18/2019 1:27 PM
I've always done 1-sided by default.  Going two-sided for most printing needs hasn't been as annoying as I envisioned.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Upgrade My Windows
How does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?

We're able to use our leaky sunroom in the winter by winterizing the windows.  We closed off the room when not in use, and use a small space heater only for the limited time we need it for the small room.
